Access Control
Access control is an electronic security solution that allows, or forbids, access to a place or resource.
It is achieved by controlling access points (e.g. doors, gates, bollards) throughout a location and is commonly found securing government, educational, commercial, industrial, mining and residential premises.
The primary reason for installing access control as a security solution is to prevent people who do not have the correct authorisation from accessing areas, or resources, they shouldn’t.
Generally, this is achieved by allocating individual swipe cards which are programmed with permissions that allow or restrict access to rooms, buildings or areas in a specified location.
These days, access control is also used to enhance site safety in several ways, including:
- Monitoring employees’ time on site
- Logging and monitoring site visitors
- Monitoring and restricting safety-wear vending machine output
- Restricting access according to induction dates and results
- Restricting access based on breathalyser results
- Restricting access to unsafe areas
Access control can also be used to monitor and control the flow of people into and out of areas, and most systems can report on all data collected for security and safety reasons.
Access control systems can be integrated with alarm systems, CCTV, vehicle gates and electric fences to maximise site security, and can be connected to 24 hour back-to-base monitoring for peace of mind.
Due to the variety of applications, it is essential that access control systems are customised to the location and needs of the site owner or manager.
